Have These Researchers Discovered COVID-19 Antibodies?

Have Researchers From the Erasmus Medical Center and Utrecht University Discovered Antibody That Can Fight COVID-19 Infection?

A team of Dutch researchers apparently discovered the very first antibody in the world that can prevent or treat coronavirus-induced disease 19 (COVID-19) infection.

The human monoclonal antibody can neutralize severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which is the cause of COVID-19.

The antibody has the potential to fight other emerging human diseases caused by viruses from the Sarbecovirus genus.

The discovery can lead to the development of antiviral medication and home testing for viral infections.

The researchers said the antibody will be used to develop a new medicine for the treatment of those currently infected by COVID-19 rather than a vaccine.

They explained that medicines are faster to develop than vaccines but they would still need months of testing.

The researchers plan to work with a pharmaceutical company for the large-scale production of the antibody as a medicine.

KEY POINTS

  1. A team of Dutch researchers apparently discovered an antibody that can prevent or treat COVID-19 infection.
  2. The discovery can lead to the development of treatment for other diseases caused by viruses from the Sarbecovirus genus and home testing for viral infections.
  3. The researchers are currently working to partner with a pharmaceutical company to produce the antibody as a medicine.

“As far as we know, this is the very first antibody that blocks the infection,” says Erasmus MC cellular biology professor Frank Grosveld.
